My Story
Amy's Pet Supplies began with a rescue dog called Luna, a single mum looking for a flexible way to earn a living, and a determination to understand pet nutrition properly.
Today you'll find an independent pet shop nestled in the beautiful countryside setting of Blake House Craft Centre in Essex, where every product has been carefully chosen and every customer receives honest, independent advice.
It Started with One Question...
"Why won't my dog eat her food?"
When Luna first came to us, she was eating a very poor-quality dog food. She would nibble at it, scatter it across the floor and rarely seemed interested in finishing a meal.
Like most owners, I visited the large pet shop chains and tried the foods that were recommended to me. We experimented with dry food, wet food and even raw feeding, but nothing really worked.
Some foods upset her stomach. Others seemed to make her itchy. Most of them she simply didn't want to eat.
That was the moment I stopped asking "Which food should I buy?" and started asking "What's actually in it?"
Learning Everything I Could
Learning Everything I Could
I became fascinated by ingredients, meat content and how pet food was actually made.
The more I researched, the more I realised that familiar brands didn't always mean better ingredients.
Eventually I found an independent pet food company producing recipes with higher meat content and carefully selected ingredients.
Luna loved it.
Her digestion improved, her skin settled and, for the first time, she genuinely enjoyed mealtimes.
Not long afterwards, the company that made Luna's favourite food announced it was closing.
Rather than accepting defeat, I contacted the owner to ask how they had started.
They kindly shared the details of their manufacturer and offered guidance that helped me create my own range.
That became Amy's Pet Food, later renamed Blake's Luxury Pet Food.
Blake was the name I would have given Ella if she had been a boy. As the business had become my other baby, the name felt like the perfect fit.
Today, Blake's Luxury Pet Food remains at the heart of Amy's Pet Supplies and reflects everything I learned through Luna.
Amy's Pet Supplies began as a small online business, with stock stored in my garage and orders packed around the school run.
As more customers discovered the business, the range grew from premium dog food into natural treats, supplements, enrichment toys, grooming products and carefully selected accessories for dogs, cats, small animals, poultry and British wildlife.
An unexpected conversation, sparked by my adventurous cat Huxley, led to a Christmas pop-up shop in Braintree. That temporary shop soon became my first permanent premises.
As the business continued to grow, we eventually outgrew that space and moved to our current home at Blake House Craft Centre, nestled in the beautiful Essex countryside among independent businesses, rustic barns and a welcoming community.
What started as a way to fit work around family life has become a business I feel incredibly privileged to call my career.
The Next Chapter
The Next Chapter
When Amy’s Pet Supplies first began, Ella was still at primary school, and the business had to fit around school runs, homework and family life.
As the years have passed, she has grown alongside the business.
Today, you’ll often find Ella helping customers in the shop, creating social media videos, testing enrichment ideas and sharing her own enthusiasm for animals. My niece Maizie also sometimes pops in to lend a hand, adding another little branch to the family-business feel.
Watching their confidence grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey. Seeing customers who remember Ella as a little girl now chatting with the young woman she is becoming is incredibly special to me.
Although Amy’s Pet Supplies is still very much my business, it has become something our family enjoys sharing together.
Like the business itself, we have all grown a great deal since those early days, and I am incredibly proud of how far we have come.
What Luna Taught Me
Looking back, I sometimes think Luna was sent to teach me far more than I could ever teach her.
She challenged me to ask questions instead of accepting the first answer. She encouraged me to look beyond the marketing, to understand ingredients, behaviour and wellbeing, and to keep learning until I found something that genuinely helped.
Because of Luna, I don't choose products based on trends or popularity. Every item on my shelves has earned its place because I believe it offers real value to pets and their owners.
She also taught me patience.
Living with a nervous rescue dog showed me that every animal is different. Some need a little more understanding, some need a different approach, and sometimes the smallest changes can make the biggest difference.
Those lessons continue to shape Amy's Pet Supplies every single day.
Every recommendation I make, every product I stock and every conversation I have with a customer begins with the same question:
"Is this genuinely the best choice for this individual pet?"
That's the promise I made to Luna.
It's the promise I still try to keep today
More Than Just a Pet Shop
More Than Just a Pet Shop
Today, Amy's Pet Supplies is a place where pet owners can shop with confidence, ask questions without feeling pressured and discover products that have been carefully chosen for quality rather than simply popularity.
Alongside our own Blake's Luxury Pet Food range, you'll find natural treats, enrichment products, supplements, toys and accessories for dogs, cats, small animals, poultry and British wildlife.
Whether you're visiting because you have a fussy eater, a nervous rescue dog, a puppy, kitten or simply want honest advice, you'll always receive the same welcome.
I believe choosing the right product is far more important than simply making a sale.
I have always wanted Amy’s Pet Supplies to feel welcoming to everyone and every pet who walks through the door.
For the dogs, I want it to feel like the excitement we remember from childhood when we were told we could visit the toy shop. A place full of interesting smells, exciting toys, tasty treats and plenty to explore. They can have a sniff around, choose something special, enjoy a cuddle if they want one and leave feeling as though they have had their very best day out.
Not every dog bounds through the door with a wagging tail, though. Some need more time, more space and a gentler approach. Nervous and reactive dogs are just as welcome, and I will always do my best to make their visit feel calm, comfortable and pressure-free.
I also want the shop to be a safe and welcoming space for every person who visits. Whether you are looking for advice, shopping for a much-loved pet or simply popping in for a browse, you will always be met with kindness, understanding and no judgement.
You’ll find Amy’s Pet Supplies at Blake House Craft Centre, surrounded by independent businesses, characterful barns and the relaxed atmosphere of the Essex countryside. Whether you are visiting for better nutrition, practical advice or a special outing with your pet, I would be delighted to welcome you.
A Final Thought
Amy’s Pet Supplies began with Luna, grew around Ella and has been shaped by every customer who has trusted me to help care for the animals they love.
Now, I’d love to become a small part of your story too.
Thank you for choosing to support an independent business built with genuine care.
Amy
