If you follow us on Instagram or Facebook, you may have already spotted a new face on our socials – Maizie, my 13-year-old niece and the newest addition to the Amy’s Pet Supplies team.
She’s bubbly, smart, and hilariously quick-witted. Customers who’ve met her already know how special she is, and we couldn’t be prouder to have her as part of our little family-run business.
But behind the smiles is an extraordinary story of strength.
When Maizie was just 8 months old, she suffered 45% burns and spent months in hospital, including time on life support. She’s endured over 50 operations over the years – and in October 2023, she became fully wheelchair-bound as the skin grafts on her right leg can no longer stretch with her growing bones. This has caused severe twisting and dislocation, leading to the difficult but necessary decision to amputate her right leg.
Despite this, Maizie remains determined and full of life – and now, we’re doing everything we can to help her get back on her feet.
Maizie isn’t able to use a traditional prosthetic leg due to complications from her injuries, so her only viable option is a groundbreaking procedure called Osseointegration. This involves inserting a metal implant into the bone, allowing a prosthetic leg to clip on directly. It offers far more control, stability, and comfort – but it’s not available on the NHS and comes at a cost of £150,000.
We’ve launched a fundraiser to help make this surgery possible for Maizie. Whether you’re in a position to donate, share the link, or just follow along with her journey – your support truly means everything.

We’ll be sharing regular updates on social media as Maizie’s story unfolds – and we’d love for you to be part of it.
Thank you for your kindness,
Amy
